The Artists

The 2014 Shaky Knees Music Festival is scheduled to host several awesome outfits like The National, Alabama Shakes, Gaslight Anthem, Iron & Wine, and Foals.

Likened to Leonard Cohen, Wilco, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, and Joy Division, The National is a Brooklyn-based powerhouse indie rock band that has taken the nation by storm. Since their arrival on the music scene, they've continually worked on perfecting their sound and developing new ways to deliver some of the finest live performances of today. The band's gloomy almost-miserable lyrics give an underrepresented demographic something to sing along to.

The Alabama Shakes have managed to reign in some recognition over the years since their inception in 2009. In 2011, You Ain't Alone, was used in a Zales jewelry TV commercial, and they also cornered a spot on MTV's list of 11 Artists to Watch in 2012. In less than a year, the band went from anonymity to rockin' the stages of venues like the Troubadour, Music Box Theater and Ryman Auditorium. If you love live musical concerts, you will want to check out the Alabama Shakes.

The latest sensation to come out of the Garden State is Gaslight Anthem, a hot young band with a powerhouse sound that takes the verve and guts of that New Jersey swagger and gives it an edgy, modern flair. At once a rock band with a classic sound and a ultra hip music maker, Gaslight Anthem has an uncanny knack for penning resonating lyrics and setting them to brilliant arrangements that hearken to the past while breaking new ground.

As a child, Samuel Beam (aka Iron and Wine) was consistently surrounded by his two passions. "In my room, the radio was really always forever on. I grew up drawing. I was always drawing, all the time, with the radio on."

After pursuing his passion for art and then ending up as a professor of cinematography to pay the bills, Beam focused his creative energies on music.

This singer is now a hero on the indie folk scene, making his way to mainstream success. His music has been featured in shows like The L Word, House M.D. and Grey's Anatomy. The film Twilight highlighted his song, Flightless Bird, American Mouth.

A critic's darling, Foals are a five-piece dance-rock band that set out to establish a brand of music they wanted to dance to. Mission accomplished!

Foals pair down-to-earth, funky beats with the ideas of contemporary math rock. At the helm is Yannis Philippakis, who pays tribute to their hometown of Oxford, England, for part of the band's style. "It's full of people who live inside their heads," he said. "That's different from being a band from an industrial town like Sheffield or Manchester. Here, you can have ambition and not be derided for it."

Foals melted into a smart local scene – one that hatched shrewd bands from Radiohead to Swervedriver to Ride.
