About Sham 69

Forming in 1976, Sham 69 were present at the genesis of the punk rock movement as they navigated the rocky and violent beginnings of early British punk. Band founder Jimmy Pursey went through tumultuous times as the band's frontman, dealing with frequent violence at the band's early shows perpetuated by the rocky crowds that followed the early punk movement. The band's momentum took off early with the release of their first single, with the band quickly signing onto Polydor Records and recording their first full length with a major record label. Sham 69 blew up all across the UK charts and established themselves as innovators in the still amorphous genre, following up their initial success almost immediately with two more releases.

The hard and heavy times of scratchy punk would lose its luster for the band, as they slowly started to transform and grow as artists. Now an irreplaceable part of the fabric of the British music scene, the band made appearances in film and other media, including the punk bible documentary D.O.A.:A Right of Passage, which chronicled the growth of the punk rock movement as it spread from the UK outwards.

The band would fall on hard times, eventually dispersing while all members pursued their own perspective side projects and solo careers. Jimmy Pursey would be particularly active, collaborating with various big names across the genre including the Sex Pistols' Steve Jones and Paul Cook, and solo performer Peter Gabriel. By 1987, the boys had spent enough time apart and Sham 69 was back in action, albeit with some lineup shakeups. The band release a constant stream of albums throughout the 80s and 90s, with some members coming and going while mainstays Jimmy Pursey and Dave Parsons continued to push and shape the band's direction.

The band would continue recording into today, though their years have been marked by occasional hiatuses and temporary breakups. Though the band formed over thirty years ago, they're songwriting and performances remains the best its ever been and the band has retained their cultural significance as both early punk icons and modern day Brit rock innovators.

Previous Hits

1978 would be a huge year for the band as they released their debut album and an immediate follow up, both having formidable showings on the charts and building early Sham 69 street credibility. The band had a slew of early hit singles, including "I Don't Wanna", "Borstal Breakout", "Angels With Dirty Faces", Tony Blair anthem "If the Kids Are United", and the #10 charting "Hurry Up Harry".

The band followed up with their greatest critical success to date, The Adventures of the Hersham Boys, which would reach #8 on the UK charts and bestow the timeless singles "Questions and Answers", "You're a Better Man Than I", and the #6 charting "Hersham Boys". The band's success has continued through the decades, with their most recent single "Hurry Up England" hitting the #10 position on the charts as recently as 2006.

Trivia

The band's varied lineups have caused confusion in the past, with there being instances of two separate iterations of Sham 69 existing at the same time.

The band has spent a tour in the People's Republic of China, making it the first big leagues punk band to ever do so.
