Born Eilleen Edwards on August 28, 1965 in Canada, Twain was raised by her mother and adoptive father in Timmins, Ontario. Being one of five children, Twain found solitude in her guitar and music. Starting at 8 years old, Twain was shuttled to TV and radio studios, and often pulled out of bed at night to sing with the house band at a local club. After losing her parents in a car accident at 21 and raising her younger siblings, Twain decided to work on her music and head to Nashville.
