Sherman Theater History

The Sherman Theater in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, has a storied history that dates back to the 1920s when construction was completed. Lacy and Rinker designed the building, which was then coined as "a paradise of architectural splendor." The theater officially had its grand opening in January 1929.

The festivities kicked off with a rendition of The Star Spangled Banner, followed by dedication and welcoming addresses. A live performance by comedy legends Oliver Hardy and Stan Laurel served as the highlight of the night. The evening also featured a silver screen showing of Synthetic Sin.

The Sherman carried on as a vaudeville theater until touring acts vanished from the American landscape and followed the suit of many theaters of the era by transitioning into a movie house.

Well into the 1940s, the theater continued to serve as the centerpiece of the community.Saturdays were set aside for cartoons and the holidays were a time for theatrical productions of beloved plays like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

The theater was a safe place where families gathered after the flood of 1955. Film companies generously donated afternoon cartoons to entertain the children during that time.

During the '50s and '60s, the Sherman Theater changed hands numerous times. Slowly, the movie theater was meeting the fate of many theaters in the country becoming less and less of an attraction.

To keep up with the changing demands of the public, the theater continued to run as a cinema, showing all kinds of movies. The theater stirred up some controversy when it hosted X-rated movies. At the time, the downtown area was going through a revival with a concentrated effort on restoring the beauty of the Victorian Main Street. Over 30 individuals decided to boycott the Sherman Theater, but before the boycott could even get launched, the theater owners and The United Methodist Church came to an agreement, and the X-rated movies were no longer offered.

The end of 1983 marked the end of the Sherman Theater. The theater went up for sale in 1983 unable to keep up with the large multiplex theaters of the day. Two years later, the theater was sold. In 1988, a campaign was launched to save the theater by a group of local university students. They billed themselves as the Far Off-Broadway Players. They hosted some fundraisers to earn some money for the Save Our Sherman Foundation cause.

Despite their efforts, finances seemed to remain a constant issue.

But not to be defeated, the Sherman Theater stayed afloat. The theater was in dire need of repairs during the '90s and sat mostly quiet during that decade.

Today, the Sherman Theater once again stands proudly in the community. Much of the original architecture has been restored and the theater is alive again with the sounds of applause and laughter.
