Renouncing the punk rock roots shared by many of their alternative rock equals, the Smashing Pumpkins offer a dynamic, densely layered and guitar-saturated sound tinged with gothic rock, dream pop, heavy metal, psychedelic rock and arena rock. At the helm is Billy Corgan, the group's main songwriter, whose liberating lyrics have carved the band's songs and albums. Like many modern-day alternative bands, the Smashing Pumpkins utilized shifts in song dynamics ranging from quiet to loud and vice versa. Corgan essentially created his own alternative universe.
The Smashing Pumpkins arrived on the national scene a couple of years after Pearl Jam and Nirvana. The Smashing Pumpkins emerged onto the musical mainstream with their second album, Siamese Dream in 1993. The Pumpkins expanded its audience with exhaustive tour schedules. Their follow-up, double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995) premiered at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart. With close to 18.25 million albums sold in the U.S. alone, the Smashing Pumpkins were one of the most commercially successful and celebrated bands of the 1990s. Their double album, Mellon Collie, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts in October 1995. Even more successful than Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie was certified nine times platinum in the U.S. and became the best-selling double album of the decade to date! The album also cultivated seven 1997 Grammy Award nominations, including Album of the Year. The album generated five singles: 1979, Zero, Tonight, Tonight, Bullet with Butterfly Wings and Thirty-Three. All but Zero landed on the Top 40.
