In 1987 SMU Mustangs football became the first, and so far only, program to receive the "Death Penalty" due to NCAA violations. The program had already been punished for violations in 1985 before again violating NCAA rules by having players who received payments from boosters. The program had a hard time recovering from being completely terminated from football operations and struggled for the following two decades. However, there is a lot of love in Dallas for the SMU Mustangs and the program has finally become relevant again and will surely soon be among the top teams in the American Athletic Conference.
