Soldier Field History
Soldier Field, the home of the Chicago Bears, is one of the most iconic venues in the National
Football League. Soldier Field is also the oldest, having hosted sporting events in Chicago since 1924. Built as a multipurpose
sports and entertainment venue, construction began on the stadium in 1919, at the end of World War I, which heavily influenced
its eventual name, Soldier Field, named in honor of the brave soldiers who fought and lost their lives in the war. The first
official game played at the renamed Soldier Field was the iconic 1926 Army/Navy Game, when the bitter rivals played to determine
the National Championship. Over 100,000 fans watched the historic game, which ended in a 21-21 tie, giving the National Championship
to the undefeated Navy Midshipmen. In its early years Soldier Field often hosted the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and later the
Northern Illinois University Huskies football teams on the collegiate level. Soldier Field is best known, though, for being
the home of the Chicago Bears, which didn't happen until 1971. The Bears had previously played their home games at Wrigley
Field, the iconic home of the Chicago Cubs. The move was supposed to be temporary for the Bears, who had intended to build
a new stadium at a nearby site. The move never happened and the Bears were able to secure a 20 year lease at the legendary
Greco-Roman styled stadium as well as a multi-million dollar renovation. Situated on the banks of Lake Michigan, Soldier Field
looks to be the home of the Bears for many years to come.
