Sonata Arctica first formed in 1995 in the burgeoning power metal scene of Kemi, Finland. They weren't always performing power metal, however. Sonata Arctica got its start playing hard rock in the clubs and venues of Kemi under the name Tricky Bean. After changing their name to Tricky Means, the band's sound began to evolve. They released their first album, "Ecliptica", in 1999 on Spinefarm Records, which was produced by Mikko Karmila of Children of Bodom fame. In 2001, they released "Silence" on the same label. It's noted for its accompanying backing vocals by Timo Kotipelto, lead singer of Stradivarius. In 2003, they released "Winterheart's Guild", an album that originally earned nine out of ten stars from the popular e-zine "Lords of Metal". In 2004, "Reckoning Night" came out on the recording label Nuclear Blast and featured the debut of keyboardist Henrik Klingenberg. 2007 brought the release of "Unia", which made the European list of top 100 albums that year. In 2009, the group went back to their darker roots with the release of their sixth album, "The Day of Grays". As of 2012's release of "Stones Grow Her Name", Sonata Arctica isn't showing any signs of slowing down. As with many metal groups, Sonata Arctica is comprised of many members. The group's permanent lineup consists of Tommy Portimo, Tony Kakko, Henrik Klingenberg, and Elias Viljanen to name a few. They were voted "Newcomer of the Year" by Hard 'n Heavy Magazine.
