In 1994, roommates Chris Cornell and Hiro Yamamoto decided to create a band.
Both had been involved in several music projects in the past, and they knew that together they could create something epic.
They brought on Scott Sundquist and Kim Thayil to complete the quartet, decided on the name Soundgarden, and immediately began
working on refining their own unique sound.
While playing regularly at venues around Seattle, Soundgarden earned the
reputation for being one of the most innovative hard rock and metal bands in the area, with their interesting mix of grunge
and alternative rock making them a huge local phenomenon. After over a year of playing countless gigs locally, the group earned
a big enough reputation that they were signed to the record label Sub Pop. Almost immediately, the band released their debut
EP, Screaming Life, in 1987 and subsequently released Fopp EP in 1998.
After a great deal of success in the 1980s, Soundgarden's
reputation exploded in the early '90s, becoming one of the most celebrated bands of the decade. The band went on tour as an
opening band for Guns N' Roses, a tour that helped them secure their place in the worldwide rock scene. After this tour, the
band had amassed thousands of new followers and an incredible reputation for being one of the best rock bands of the time.
In 1992, the group received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Metal Performance for their release, Badmotorfinger.

name "Soundgarden" was inspired by a pipe sculpture in Sand Point Park in Seattle called "A Sound Garden". The band was fascinated
by the haunting sound created by the hollow pipes of the sculpture when the wind passed through.
