South Carolina Gamecocks Basketball Team Info

The South Carolina Gamecocks have had some great seasons over the years, and usually that is a result of having some great players on the roster throughout their history of the program. That is certainly the case for the Gamecocks, who had one of the best scorers to ever pick up a basketball in Alex English. English posted some great seasons for the Gamecocks and eventually moved on to play in the National Basketball Association. English averaged more than 20 points per game over the course of his pro career, cementing his legacy as a player that was often unstoppable on the offensive end of the floor. These days, the Gamecocks continue to bring some very talented players to the hardwood on a regular basis, and you never know when you're going to watch the next superstar explode onto the scene and lead the Gamecocks back to the Big Dance.

Though we know the pro game can be exciting as well, there's something extra special when it's only university pride at stake, helping to elevate the entire experience along the way.

South Carolina Gamecocks Basketball History

The South Carolina Gamecocks basketball program goes back a long way, and fans have been enjoying watching this team hit the court for many years now. The Gamecocks won their first conference title, in the Southern Conference, in 1927, and would add three more conference crowns to their resume before moving to the Atlantic Coast Conference. The team won their lone ACC Championship in 1970 and eventually moved to the Southeast Conference. The Gamecocks have also been to the NCAA Tournament more than a handful of times, making it all the way to the Sweet Sixteen on three occasions in the 1970s. With a tradition of excellence in an elite conference, the Gamecocks are always out to prove that they can do a lot more than bring it on the gridiron, keeping fans absolutely glued to the hardwood throughout the season as they cheer on their Gamecocks at every turn.

South Carolina Gamecocks Trivia

Can you name one of the two Gamecocks who have led the nation in scoring during a season?

The answer is either Grady Wallace or Zam Frederick. In 1957, Wallace became the first Gamecock to win the distinction when he put up a ridiculous 31.3 points per game, which was nearly matched when Zam Fredrick topped the nation in scoring in 1981 with 28.9.
