Led by Matt Fincher, the men's basketball coach, the Spartans have looked better than ever in the recent years with three winning seasons and participation in the Peach-Belt Conference three years in a row. In 2005 the Spartans finished with their best record as a member of the NCAA Division II and will continue that drive and spirit for the next games this season, against North Florida, Jacksonville and more. The campus opened in 1967 as the Spartanburg Regional Campus and in 1975 was renamed the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg, and in 2004 the USC Board of Trustees changed the name to ensure education was geared toward those South Carolinians of upper state. The athletic teams compete in the Atlantic Sun Conference in Division I of the NCAA.
