Adapted from James A. Michener's Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Tales of the South Pacific, from 1947, South Pacific contains
music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and the book by Joshua Logan and Hammerstein. The musical takes audiences
on a journey to an island in the South Pacific during World War II where an American nurse stationed at a U.S. Naval base
falls for an expatriate French plantation owner, but has a hard time accepting his mixed-race children. A second romance involves
a U.S. lieutenant who falls in love with a Tonkinese woman but struggles with what others would think if they were to get
married. The issue of racial prejudice is openly aired throughout this powerful musical, most blatantly in the tune, You've
Got to Be Carefully Taught.
South Pacific not only generated a critically acclaimed storyline; it also produced a number of songs, including I'm Gonna
Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair, Bali Ha'i, Some Enchanted Evening, Younger Than Springtime, Happy Talk and I'm in Love with
a Wonderful Guy. The Broadway stage production earned 10 Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Musical and Best Libretto,
and it is the sole musical production to claim all four Tony Awards for acting. The show was a smashing success, spawning
successful revivals and tours along with a 1958 film.
