Influenced by the LA club scene growing up in the thriving metropolis, brothers Ron and Russell Mael knew that music was going to be in their future. They were drawn to bands like The Doors, Love and The Standells and The Beach Boys, and later were heavily influenced by the popular British bands of the time like The Who, Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd and the Kinks. They formed their first band in the late 1960s, and were quickly signed to a record label. When they switched to the famous Warner Bros. Records, they changed their name to Sparks. They adopted the electro-infused music in the 1970s and achieved mainstream success in the US in the 1980s. Although it took them many years to find their niche among American audiences, when they did, they found fame and a large following of loyal fans. Their best known song in the US was hit single "Cool Places" was a chart-topping success in the mid-80s.
