Split Lip Rayfield Background
When Split Lip Rayfield initially formed, their main musical
gimmick was the one-string bass used by Jeff Eaton that was fashioned out of an old 1978 Mercury Grand Marquis gas tank. The
group named this unique and somewhat crudely designed instrument Stitchgiver, and it appeared on stage with the band wherever
they went. The band's original members include guitarist Kirk Rundstrom, bassist Jeff Eaton, banjo player Eric Mardis, and
mandolin player Wayne Gottstine.
After the release of successful albums like Split Lip Rayfield (1998), In the Mud (1999),
and Never Make It Home (2001), the band would embark on nationwide tours to promote their eclectic and fun songs. During each
tour, the crowds that saw Split Lip Rayfield perform live fell in love with their down-home charm and hypnotic acoustic performances.
When Split Lip Rayfield stepped onto stage, the audience couldn't help but tap their feet and start to dance.
they took a short hiatus after their Never Make It Home tour, the band remained intact for most of the past fifteen years,
touring incessantly around the country and bringing their progressive post-punk sounds to enthusiastic crowds. In 2006, however,
tragedy struck when Rundstrom sought medical attention for his swollen and painful throat. The doctors wasted no time and
discovered that this Split Lip Rayfield member had esophageal cancer. Unfortunately, chemotherapy and radiation weren't powerful
enough to heal Rundstrom of his cancer, but he still got back on stage to perform his shows for another year and a half. After
his death, the band decided to keep playing shows in memoriam of their lost friend. They have never added a replacement, but
instead keep their group a trio in honor of Rundstrom.
This country, folk, rock, punk, and bluegrass group is one of
the most interesting and nonconforming musical groups out there, and despite tragedy, they still continue to bring their diverse
music to cities all over the country. As they get back on the road to put on yet another fantastic performance, make sure
that you are in the audience by heading to StubHub right away to purchase your Split Lip Rayfield tickets!

While the name "Split Lip Rayfield" is not based on any of the
members in the band, it was inspired by a real person. When Eaton was a young boy in Gumbo, Missouri, he did know somebody
who went by Split Lip Rayfield, which is where the band's name came from.
