Sporting Kansas City are one of the top teams in Major League Soccer and have won

Kansas City Major League Soccer
Sporting Kansas City plays in the MLS, or Major League Soccer, which is the premiere
soccer league in the United States and Canada and is also a member of CONCACAF. Nineteen teams in the league compete during
the regular season which begins each March hoping to earn a spot in the postseason. Each team plays thirty four regular season
games with the regular season champion being awarded the Supporters' Shield. The top ten teams advance to the playoffs with
the last two teams playing in the MLS Cup in December. The first season of the MLS was in 1996 with ten charter members of
which the Columbus Crew was one. Plans for establishing the league began as far back as 1988 when U.S. Soccer made an agreement
with FIFA to have plans to get a Division I professional soccer league in place in order to be allowed to host the 1994 World
Cup. The league is granted a spot for three American teams in the CONCACAF Champions League while another team has the chance
to qualify via the U.S. Open Cup. Year after year MLS gains more fans and it stands as one of the five major professional
sports leagues in the United States and Canada.

developed some big time rivalries over its years in the MLS. Early postseason classics against the Los Angeles Galaxy made

sports figure Lamar Hunt who also was a co-founder of the American Football League, Major League Soccer, the Kansas City Chiefs,
and the United Soccer Association. In 2000 former US Men's National Team goalkeeper Tony Meola set an MLS record with 681
consecutive shutout minutes en route to winning MLS MVP and Goalkeeper of the Year.
