Sporting Kansas City are one of the top teams in Major League Soccer and have won multiple MLS Cups and US Open Cups and every game is action packed and full of excitement and tension whether at home or on the road. It was one of the charter members of the MLS and was known for much of its existence as the Kansas City Wizards. Fervent Kansas City fans have been cheering on the squad since their first game back in 1995. Continually fielding one of the best teams in the MLS, the Kansas City squad is a perennial contender for the MLS Cup championship and never fails to deliver exciting and intriguing match ups to the thousands of fans who make it out to each and every home game.

Sporting Kansas City are currently currently jockeying for position to make the playoffs in the stacked Eastern Conference of the MLS. There are still four regular season home games for Kansas City to score some big wins in hopes of moving up the standings before the playoffs. The first game is on September 23rd when Real Esteli comes to Sporting Park. On September 26th. Perhaps the biggest game remaining on the home schedule for Sporting Kansas City comes on September 26th when the New England Revolution, who sit just a few points behind Kansas City in the conference standings, come to town. The final home game of the regular season will be on October 26th when the New York Red Bulls come to town. This will be your last chance to cheer on Sporting Kansas City and provide them with some momentum heading into the postseason and is sure to be a thrilling game.

Sporting Kansas City Major League Soccer

Sporting Kansas City plays in the MLS, or Major League Soccer, which is the premiere soccer league in the United States and Canada and is also a member of CONCACAF. Nineteen teams in the league compete during the regular season which begins each March hoping to earn a spot in the postseason. Each team plays thirty four regular season games with the regular season champion being awarded the Supporters' Shield. The top ten teams advance to the playoffs with the last two teams playing in the MLS Cup in December. The first season of the MLS was in 1996 with ten charter members of which the Columbus Crew was one. Plans for establishing the league began as far back as 1988 when U.S. Soccer made an agreement with FIFA to have plans to get a Division I professional soccer league in place in order to be allowed to host the 1994 World Cup. The league is granted a spot for three American teams in the CONCACAF Champions League while another team has the chance to qualify via the U.S. Open Cup. Year after year MLS gains more fans and it stands as one of the five major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada.

Sporting Kansas City Rivalries

Sporting Kansas City has developed some big time rivalries over its years in the MLS. Early postseason classics against the Los Angeles Galaxy made any time these two sides meet an unmissable event. In recent years the Chicago Fire have emerged as a big rival of Sporting Kansas City as a result of playing one another several times in the regular season and postseason.

Sporting Kansas City was founded in 1996 as the Kansas City Wizards by legendary sports figure Lamar Hunt who also was a co-founder of the American Football League, Major League Soccer, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the United Soccer Association. In 2000 former US Men's National Team goalkeeper Tony Meola set an MLS record with 681 consecutive shutout minutes en route to winning MLS MVP and Goalkeeper of the Year.
