Sports Authority Field at Mile High Historical Events

The Denver Broncos have come a long way since they were the object of many jokes during the fledgling years of the American Football League in the early 1960s.

It all started back in 1959 when Bob Howsam, an established minor league baseball owner, was given an AFL charter franchise. Howsam didn't have much money to invest in his team, forcing him to outfit team members in old uniforms from the Copper Bowl. The vertically striped socks of the Broncos' uniforms fueled the jokes even more. Jack Faulkner took the reins two years later as general manager and head coach. One of the first things he did was to burn the socks in a public ceremony.

For the majority of their tenure during the decade-long run of the AFL, the Denver Broncos didn't fare very well. But on a bright note, they did have some milestone moments. On September 9, 1960, they were victorious in the inaugural AFL game shutting out the Boston Patriots. They also claimed the first win ever for an AFL team against an NFL contender, the Detroit Lions.

The year 1973 marked their 14th season, and under the guidance of Coach John Ralston, the Broncos scored their first winning season ever. In the 14-year time frame between 1977 and 1991, the Broncos claimed seven AFC Western Division titles and AFC championships in 1977, 1986, 1987 and 1989.

The Broncos reached the zenith of the pro football world when they garnered their first world championship in Super Bowl XXXII against the Green Bay Packers. Their triumph over the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl XXXIII was also a hallmark moment for the Broncos. They were one of only five teams to win back-to-back Super Bowl championships.

Besides hosting some notable moments in football history, the Sports Authority Field at Mile High has additionally been the site of other historical moments. For instance, on August 28, 2008, the-then Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama accepted the Democratic Party's nomination for President of the United States at the Sports Authority Field at Mile High. Approximately 84,000 people attended Obama's speech, exceeding the normal capacity of the stadium due to the placement of crowds on the field.

Sports Authority Field at Mile High History

Although many Bronco fans were happy with the Mile High Stadium, which served as the home to their beloved Broncos for more than five decades, the team wanted a new, innovative stadium. Construction was launched in late summer of 1999. Construction of the new Invesco Field at Mile High came to fruition in just over two years. It was renamed to Sports Authority Field at Mile High in 2011.

The stadium is able to accommodate 76,000 fans and is equipped with many amenities, including the Sports Legends Mall Legacy Walk, a Broncos team store and the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame.

Sports Authority Field at Mile High Trivia

Have you ever heard of the "Incomplete Chant?" A home game tradition, this chant comes into play when the rival team throws an incomplete pass. Bronco fans give a resounding "in-com-plete," followed by the wailing trombone as a sound effect.

The PA announcer will confirm the actual attendance for the game along with the number of people who didn't make the game. If that number falls over a thousand, Bronco fans will shout out "boo" aimed at the empty seats.
