History
The Spreckels Theatre in San Diego, CA is one of the most treasured theaters in the country. It is located
in the historic theater district on the famed Broadway Street in the heart of the city, and first opened its doors in 1912.
The theater was the place to catch minstrel shows, appearances from the most famous comedians of the day, and screenings of
the newly-created silent films. In its heyday it was one of the first vaudeville houses in California, and has become one
of San Diego's finest attractions. While in the beginning, the theater was used for live vaudeville performances and screenings
of silent films, today it is the site of some of the most prestigious live performances in the country. From chart-topping
soloists to touring theatrical productions to first-run films, this theater has it all and draws thousands of visitors each
year.
For over 100 years, the theater has been home to some of the most exciting performances on the West Coast. And
with the restoration that was completed in 2012 for the theater's centennial celebration, it is even more stunning than before.
It is a hot spot in San Diego and a treasured landmark to previous and current residents. In fact, it was designated as a
National Historic Site in 1973. The architecture and design of the building has made it not only a nod to the first days of
popular entertainment in San Diego, but has also created a beautiful place for residents and visitors to come and enjoy some
of the greatest live acts in the world. You will find something for everyone at this 1,463-seat venue, and you won't want
to miss seeing your favorite performer live.

Trivia
The Spreckels Theatre was there at the
birth of vaudeville and over-the-top live performances from some of the most famous performers of all time. For years before
sound-filled movies were popular, the Spreckels Theatre was the place to go for live entertainment. And now, the theater is
once again the talk of the town and one of the most exciting places to see the most exciting concerts and live performances
in the state.
Because the Spreckels Theatre is such a renowned venue and treasured landmark, the American Regional Theatre
at the Spreckels (ARTS) has taken it upon themselves to gather funds to keep this historic building running and looking as
beautiful as it did 100 years ago. A portion of the money collected at the box office is used to fund the Restoration Fund.
One of the latest projects ARTS helped fund was the restoration of the 75-year-old marquee sign on the outside of the building.
