In 1935 eight local St Paul farmers (Bill Smith, Ray Manegre, John McKillip, Carl Smith, Maurice Smith, Jim Gooding, Ralph Butts and Ed Unger) came up with the idea for a Rodeo in their small, Willamette Valley home. In its first years cowboys came from all over Oregon to compete in the $500 purse, and today the nonprofit organization is one of the nation's 20 largest rodeos.
