Steely Dan Background

Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were drawn together by music. One day, Fagen was walking past The Red Balloon, a café in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, when he heard Becker playing the guitar. Fagen was so stricken with Becker's skills on the electric guitar that he approached them, and the two immediately bonded over their love for music. Before they knew it, the talented duo was writing songs together, and they even joined various local bands together. In 1969, the duo decided to move to Brooklyn in the hopes of furthering their musical careers. They had minimal success initially, taking odd composing jobs just to support themselves. They even went on tour as band members for Jay and the Americans for over a year, but finally decided that living in Brooklyn wasn't the key to their success, so they packed up and moved out to Los Angeles.

Fagen and Becker found decent success immediately upon moving to Los Angeles, as their acquaintance Gary Katz hired them to become songwriters for ABC Records. The songs that the duo started to write were phenomenal, but Katz realized quickly that they were too complex for other artists to tackle, so he encouraged the duo to record them on their own. Becker and Fagen accrued a recording band and started working on producing their own songs, and in 1972 Steely Dan released their debut album, Can't Buy a Thrill. Two singles from the album became immediate hits – "Do It Again" and "Reelin' In the Years". Suddenly, Steely Dan had become the most interesting new band in classic rock. Throughout the Seventies, Steely Dan continued to crank out phenomenal rock tunes that captivated audiences across the world. Steely Dan frequently scored spots on the music charts, and each new album earned praise from both music critics and their rabid fan base. Steely Dan became accustomed to performing in front of sold-out crowds wherever they went, and their records flew off the shelves rapidly. In addition to accruing a cult following throughout the years, Steely Dan has also earned several awards and honors, such as an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and a Grammy Award for their work in music.

Steely Dan disbanded in 1981 for several years, but since 1993, Becker and Fagen have been back with more energy and passion than ever. Their songs continue to stand the test of time, and few jazz rock outfits will ever be as influential as Steely Dan. Whether you have been a Steely Dan fan since the 1970s or have just recently stumbled upon their phenomenal body of work, this is one band you definitely don't want to miss seeing live! Make you way to StubHub right away so that you can secure your Steely Dan tickets before they're all sold out!
