Steve Lacy grew up in Compton, California, where he first picked up a guitar at age seven after playing Guitar Hero. That early spark led him to produce his first songs entirely on an iPhone using GarageBand, a DIY approach that became part of his origin story. In 2015, he joined the alternative R&B band The Internet as their guitarist and contributed production to eight tracks on their album Ego Death, which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album. He was still in high school.
Lacy's self-produced debut EP, Steve Lacy's Demo (2017), earned critical praise and introduced his signature blend of R&B, neo soul, funk, and psychedelia to a wider audience. That same year, he co-produced "Pride" on Kendrick Lamar's Grammy-winning album DAMN. and featured alongside Frank Ocean on Tyler, The Creator's double-platinum single "911 / Mr. Lonely." Production credits for Solange, Kali Uchis, Mac Miller, and Vampire Weekend followed in quick succession, establishing Lacy as one of the most sought-after collaborators in modern music before he had even released a solo album.
His debut full-length, Apollo XXI (2019), earned a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album. But it was his second album, Gemini Rights (2022), that pushed him into a different stratosphere. The album cracked the top ten on the Billboard 200, and its lead single "Bad Habit" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 after going viral on TikTok, where a snippet soundtracked over 400,000 videos. Gemini Rights won the Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album, and "Bad Habit" received nominations for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance. In 2023, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. His third album, Oh Yeah? (2026), featured collaborations with SZA and Erykah Badu and debuted at number 14 on the Billboard 200.
