Born in Handsworth, Birmingham, England, Steve Winwood was the son of a semi-professional musician/foundryman,
Lawrence. His father mainly played the clarinet and saxophone, while Winwood developed a penchant for Dixieland jazz and swing
as a boy. He first entertained publicly with his dad and older brother as part of the Ron Atkinson Band when he was just eight
years old. While he was a student at the Great Barr School, Winwood was a regular on Birmingham's R&B scene. He played
the guitar and the Hammond B-3 organ. He also backed up blues legends like T-Bone Walker, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Bo
Diddley, Otis Spann Chuck Berry and more!
At the age of 15, Steve Winwood served as the driving force behind the Spencer
Davis Group, cultivating a slew of chart successes along the way with timeless classics like "I'm a Man," "Gimme Some Lovin'"
and "Keep On Running." The global recognition of these tracks boosted Winwood's confidence and fortified his resolve to discover
new rhythmic opportunities.
In 1967, Winwood departed from the Spencer Davis Group and helped to form Traffic. Coveted
for their diversity and brilliantly crafted tunes, Traffic consistently bucked tradition to celebrate a string of sounds and
inspirations. Milestone albums like John Barleycorn Must Die and Mr. Fantasy cemented their standing as one of the most significant
British groups of the '60s and '70s.
Hungry to take a turn with other creative collaborations, Winwood exited Traffic
in 1969 and signed on into a new group established by Ginger Baker (drummer) and Eric Clapton (guitarist). Clapton, Baker
and Winwood were eventually joined by Rick Grech (bassist). Together, they became Blind Faith, which many critics billed as
the first rock supergroup. Blind Faith also cultivated international acclaim, with songs like "Can't Find My Way Home," which
continues to stand out as one of Winwood's most celebrated successes.
In 1970, Winwood reestablished Traffic and steered
the group to success with lauded albums like Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory and Low Heeled Spark of High Heeled Boys.
years later, Traffic divided once again, with Winwood tempted by the magnetism of solo projects and creative collaborations.
In 1977, Winwood made his solo debut. His debut symbolized his intrepid new creative course. Such a transition didn't come
as a surprise for those who followed Winwood's extraordinary career. Starting with Traffic and encompassing through such hallmark
solo albums as Roll With It and Back In The High Life, Winwood has fostered a fidgety creative spirit, cultivating rich musical
traditions such as English folk, R&B, Delta blues and West African calypso, and blurring these inspirations within in
his own authentic brand of music.
Winwood's solo career produced a remarkable inventory of pop tunes like "When You
See A Chance," "Back in The High Life," "Higher Love" and "Valerie." His solo album, About Time, continued to bolster that
success, earning him one of his highest Billboard chart rankings.
Eventually, Winwood revived his creative collaboration
with Eric Clapton. Nominated for a pair of Grammy Awards, their CD/DVD Live At Madison Square Gardenpresented fans with some
of the most electric shows of their combined careers.
Today, Winwood continues to take stages around the planet. Compounded
to his many accomplishments as a solo artist, Winwood remains in high demand for creative partnerships with other talents.
His unique Hammond organ has been included in "Voodoo Chile" (Jimi Hendrix) and "Baggage Claim" (Miranda Lambert).
