The History of Sun Life Stadium
Sun Life Stadium was completed in 1987. Built with private funds
at a cost of $115 million, it was then renovated in 2007 at a cost of $250 million.
Joe Robbie, the original and then-owner
of the Miami Dolphins was the first of his kind to build a stadium entirely with private funds. Executive Suites, along with
a club level, helped to finance the construction of the stadium, along with the season ticket holders committing to long-term
agreements. In return, the fans have received first-class amenities in a state-of-the-art venue!
The stadium started
with Robbie's dream of building a new stadium that could additionally host a variety of sporting events. It was home to the
then Florida Marlins Baseball Club from 1993 until 2011. Although Robbie had the vision to build the facility to hold a multitude
of events, it was H. Wayne Huizenga who was the leading contributor in bringing that dream to fruition. He purchased 50 percent
of the then-named Joe Robbie Stadium in 1990 and became the driving proponent to bring Major League Baseball to South Florida.
The newly formed Florida Marlins were placed in the National League. The Marlins played their first game on April 5, 1993,
claiming victory over the L.A. Dodgers.
Huizenga gained complete ownership of the stadium in January 1994. He eventually
sold 50 percent to Stephen M. Ross of New York and Palm Beach in February 2008. Ross closed on the purchase of an additional
45 percent in January 2009. Huizenga still has a 5 percent share of both the stadium and the Miami Dolphins.
Stadium, as it was dubbed from 1996-2005, changed to Dolphins Stadium in 2005-2006, with a change again in April 2006 to Dolphin
Stadium. Ross then partnered with Jimmy Buffet to change the name to Land Shark Stadium. They announced the renaming on May
9, 2009, but took that title for less than a year.
Fast-forward to present day, when Sun Life Financial, a Canadian
life insurance firm, acquired the naming rights to the venue. It was renamed Sun Life Stadium as of January 20, 2010.
