Swimming for competition can probably be dated back to the early 1800s, although the only stroke was something similar to today's breaststroke. Swimming was an official event in the first modern Olympics in Athens, but all four strokes were not clearly defined until 1952. Summer Sanders won four medals in the '29 Olympics, and Mark Spitz won a record seven different gold medals in the Munich Olympics of '72.
