The band's front man, Steve Miller, was born in 1943 in Milwaukee and attended high school in Dallas, where he formed a friendship with Boz Scaggs, who would ultimately work with Miller during their formative years. Miller taught Scaggs the guitar, and the two later teamed up to form the Steve Miller Band in 1968 after Miller's days at the University of Wisconsin. Scaggs went solo after a couple of albums, and it was after his departure that the band's greatest album sales were achieved. Miller's two greatest albums were The Joker in 1973 and the follow-up release, Fly Like an Eagle in 1976.
