Hailing from Windsor, Ontario, R&B songstress Tamia enrolled in acting and singing classes
as a child. Eventually, she started performing in theatrical productions and local choirs. She soon garnered a solid reputation
and claimed a number of awards, including the YTV Vocal Achievement Award in 1993. A year later, she earned the Steve Ross
Music Scholarship at the Annual Salute to Excellence of the American Academy of Achievement.
Additionally in 1994, she
went to a party her manager Brenda Richie hosted for acclaimed R&B singer Luther Vandross. It was there she was introduced
to Quincy Jones, who was so impressed with her talent, he took Tamia under his wing as his protege.
She was included
on Jones' album, Q's Jook Joint, with the song, You Put a Move on My Heart. The song yielded a spot in the Top 10 R&B
charts and also earned her a Grammy nod for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
Tamia also did a duet with Babyface
for the album. Slow Jams, additionally scored a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group.
on, Tamia lent her vocals to Miss You along with Chaka Khan, Brandy and Gladys Knight for the movie soundtrack for Set It
Off (1995). She scored another Grammy nod with this song as well - making a total of three Grammy nominations before she even
put out an album herself.
The publicity from her projects compounded with Grammy, Soul Train Music Awards and NAACP
Image Awards nominations, gave Tamia leverage in the music industry.
She meticulously worked on her first album in 1996
and 1997, making time to take a part in Speed II: Cruise Control in 1997. She additionally contributed to the movie's soundtrack
with Make Tonight Beautiful.
Her debut album arrived in the spring of 1998. Her self-titled work featured a celebrated
group of producers and talents, such as Stevie J., Mario Winans, Quincy Jones, Jermaine Dupri, Tim Kelly and Bob Robinson,
Jermaine Dupri and Keith Crouch. The album climbed to No. 18 on Billboard's R&B chart.
In 2000, she won the NAACP
Image Award for Outstanding Song for Spend My Life With You.
Two years later, after inking a deal with Elektra, she
released her sophomore album. A Nu Day boasted production collaborations from Shep Crawford, Missy Elliott and Dallas Austin.
in My House burst out of the gate as a surprise Top Ten Hot 100 hit. It also helped catapult the album into the Top 10 of
the R&B chart. More (2004) and Between Friends (2006) kept the momentum of Top 10 R&B albums.
