The band formed in 2004 after the breakup of Nick Reinhart and Nathan Latona's former band No Regard. Jeff Worms and Vince Rogers joined shortly thereafter, but Tera Melos rehearsed for nearly a full year before choosing to debut live. Their first untitled debut full-length was released on in 2005 and afterward, guitarist Nick Reinhart started contributing more prominent vocals to the music. Their Complex Full of Phantoms album was named One of the most overlooked albums of 2005 by AP magazine. In 2007 guitarist Jeff Worms, left the band, but the rest of the guys embarked on their first national tour anyway. After that, they toured alongside By the End of Tonight and Facing New York. In 2008, drummer Vince left the group and was replaced by John Clardy. The following year, the band toured with popular groups such as the RX Bandits, These Arms are Snakes, and Melt Banana in addition to headlining their own tours. In 2010, the band released their album Patagonian Rats album toured the west-coast tour with the recently reunited Firehose in 2012.
