Texas Longhorns Football History
Since 1893, the Texas
Longhorns have been thrilling football fans in the Lone Star State. It didn't take long for the program to become a success,
with undefeated seasons in 1900, 1914, 1918 and 1920. The team won their first official National Championship in 1963, and
created a dynasty when they won two more in 1969 and 1970 under legendary Longhorns coach Darrell Royal. Royal is one of the
most influential figures in Texas football, becoming the Athletic Director after he retired from coaching in 1976. To honor
Darrell Royal, the University of Texas administration renamed their home stadium in his honor. Since then, the Longhorns have
gone on to win another National Championship in 2005 in a memorable match up with the USC Trojans and their stars Matt Leinart
and Reggie Bush under Head Coach Mac Brown. The Longhorns are now led by first year coach Charlie Strong, who is working hard
to rebuild this proud and revered football program.
