Texas Tech Red Raiders Football Schedule

The Texas Tech Red Raiders tend to have plenty of explosive playmakers from year to year, making them crucial parts of the battle for the top spot in the Big 12, a conference routinely considered one of the very best in the nation. The Texas Tech Red Raiders Football team has been one of the biggest draws in Lubbock, Texas since the team's founding in 1925, building them into a powerhouse and solidifying them as one of the biggest parts of the local sports scene. Take a look at the schedule and you're bound to see a little something for everyone, from big-time rivals to games against prominent out-of-conference opponents that will have everyone buzzing around town.

The 2014 season kicks off at Jones AT&T Stadium on Aug. 30 when the Red Raiders take on the Central Arkansas Bears. The home opener at Lubbock is always a huge event and with such high expectations going into the 2014 season you can expect Jones AT&T Stadium to be overflowing with excitement. From there, it's one highly anticipated matchup after another as the Red Raiders look to round into form and make a run at another conference title. The only thing you want to remember, though, is that there is a lot more to the schedule than just the home games, as hitting the road to see the Red Raiders do their thing during an away game can every bit as exciting.

Red Raiders Team Info

There is no reason to believe that the Texas Tech Red Raiders football program is not on the upswing despite some ups and downs during the 2013 season. There is a talented group of returning players coming back to Lubbock along with major recruits on both sides of the ball, which will doubtless give the Red Raiders a major boost this season. To win in the Big 12, you have to have a well-rounded team that can do a little bit of everything, and that's exactly what the Red Raiders have once again with a well-rounded roster that make big plays on both sides of the ball. Each season in the Big 12 is full of great matchups as many of the teams have long standing rivalries with one another.

The 2013 team finished sixth in the Big 12 with a 4-5 conference record and their overall 8-5 record allowed them to participate in the Holiday Bowl. The Red Raiders were a thrilling team to watch as they ranked second in the FBS in passing yards per game with an average of 392.8 yards. The 2013 season started with a bang as the Red Raiders won their first seven games before dropping five in a row. The season did end on a winning note with a 37-23 victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils in the Holiday Bowl. If the Red Raiders can carry that momentum into the 2014 season and avoid going on a long losing streak midway through the schedule they could be serious contenders in the Big 12. With the Raiders looking to dominate the opposition and reestablish themselves as powerhouses of the conference, it's the perfect time to head out and get right into the middle of the bone-jarring excitement once again this season.

Texas Tech Red Raiders History

The Big 12 has long been known as one of the premiere college football conferences in the country and it should be as hotly contested as ever during the 2014 season. The schools which comprise the Big 12 are Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas Tech, Baylor, TCU, West Virginia, and Iowa State. To date the Red Raiders have won 11 conference championships and one division title and have an overall winning record. The Raiders have also had plenty of top-tier players, dating back to early legends like E.J. Holub, Walt Schlinkman, Dave Parks and more to more recent superstars like Michael Crabtree and Ted Watts. This is a program that tends to not go very long in between having superstar-heavy teams looking to take their game to the next level and bring home another conference title. Over the years, the Red Raiders have even sent 150 players to the NFL/AFL and seven to be drafted in the first round.

Texas Tech Red Raiders Football Trivia

Did you know that Bake Turner would go on to win an AFL and NFL title after dominating for the Red Raiders?

When Turner was drafted in the 12th round back in 1962, it didn't take long for him to become a major component of the team. He would go to the AFL All-Star game in 1963 and then win an AFL title in 1968. Then it was on to the NFL, where he helped the New York Jets beat the Baltimore Colts in one of the most famous games in the history of the league.

Over the years, the Red Raiders have had more than their fair share of big-time playmakers who have come through their roster, with players like E.J. Holub also winning titles both in the AFL and the NFL after years of dominating for Texas Tech. Other Super Bowl alumni include Curtis Jordan, Bob Kilcullen, Ted Watts, Maury Buford, Timmy Smith, Kliff Kingsbury and Dylan Gandy.
