About Thais Los Angeles
Thaïs is a
stunning opera that follows the story of a beautiful courtesan in Alexandria named Thaïs. Thaïs embraces all of
the sensual delights that Alexandria has to offer, but a monk by the name of Athanael is troubled by her sinful ways of life.
He sets out on a pilgrimage to save her soul, but not even the pious monk is impervious to Thaïs' erotic allure, and
he succumbs to his own passions. The Los Angeles production of Thaïs is comprised of Nino Machaidze as Thaïs, Placido
Domingo as Athanael, Paul Groves as Nicias, and the LA Opera Orchestra and Chorus as musical accompaniment. With an all-star
cast and conductor Patrick Fournillier at the helm, this intoxicating opera provides a feast for the eyes and ears with its
hedonistic display of pleasures, and it's sure to be one of the best performances this season.
The opera was first performed
at the Opera Garnier in Paris on March 16, 1894. It was also performed in Italy at the Teatro Lirico Internazionale in Milan
on October 17, 1903, with Lina Cavalieri and Francesco Maria Bonini in the title roles. 1907 marked the opera's American debut,
with Mary Garden playing the title role.
The stunning soprano Nino Machaidze is sure to give a riveting performance
as the enchantingly beautiful Thaïs. Machaidze got her big break in 2008 at the Salzburg Festival, when she sang Gounod's
Juliette in a new production that the festival had originally planned for Netrebko and Rolando Villazon. After impressing
the notoriously hard-to-please Salzburg audience, the 25 year old opera singer became an immediate star. Since then, she has
appeared in numerous operas and has made a number of recordings.
Director Nicola Raab's work has taken her to the Bavarian
State Opera in Munich, the Vienna State Opera, Zurich Opera, The New Israeli Opera, the Salzburg Festival and Teatro La Fenice
in Venice. Her previous productions include Parsifal, The Barber of Seville, The Io Passion, and Death and the Maiden. This
impressive young director is bringing her talents to the production of Thaïs, and opera goers are excited to see what's
in store for them during this season.
Thais Los Angeles Breakthrough
Thaïs began captivating audiences
ever since its debut in 1894. People couldn't get enough of this hedonistic tale, and it soon became Jules Massenet's most
performed opera after Manon and Werther. The role of Thaïs is notoriously difficult to sing, allowing only the most talented
performers to obtain the role. Modern performers of the role have included Anna Moffo, Carol Neblett, Beverly Sills, Leontyne
Price, Renee Fleming, and Elizabeth Futral. Now Nino Machaidze is set to join the ranks of other performers who have perfected
this coveted role. With Placido Domingo playing alongside her, these talented performers are sure to evoke every passion that
the opera intended to portray. Los Angels opera goers are in for a real treat this season as Thaïs begins its performances.
Thais Los Angeles Trivia
Did you know that Thaïs is based on a book of the same name?
The opera Thaïs
is based on a book of the same name that was published in 1890 by Anatole France. It is based on events in the life of the
legendary Saint Thaïs of Egypt, who converted to Christianity. The book was also adapted in 1917 for two silent films,
an Italian and an American version.
As the curtains draw back to reveal a beautiful stage
set in Byzantine rule, you and the audience will feel as if you've been transported to ancient Alexandria. With the LA Orchestra
and Chorus in the background, you will explore the journey of the beautiful Thaïs and her would-be savior, Athanael,
