About Thao and the Get Down Stay Down
The indie folk rock
group Thao and the Get Down Stay Down consists of Thao Nguyen on vocals and guitar, and Adam Thompson on vocals, bass, and
keyboard. While attending the College of William and Mary, Thao Nguyen met a drummer by the name of Willis Thompson, who would
later become a member of the band. Nguyen and Thompson then met Adam Thompson during a show, who joined the band, in addition
to Frank Stewart. The four members started playing together and released their first full-length album "Like the Linen" in
2005. By 2008, the band had released another album called "We Brave Bee Stings And All," which included tracks like "Bag of
Hammers," "Fear and Convenience," and "Swimming Pools." The album was met with praise by fans and critics, and it hit the
number 10 position on emusic.com's list of the best albums for 2008.
After returning to the studio, Thao and the Get
Down Stay Down released their next album, "Know Better Learn Faster" in October of 2009, and they embarked on a tour of the
United States with The Portland Cello Project. Thao and the Get Down Stay Down have also played at a variety of the hottest
music festivals, like Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival and South by Southwest.
Thao and the Get Down Stay
Down's Breakthrough Album
Thao and the Get Down Stay Down won indie fans over with their unique pop sounds. With the
release of their first album "Like the Linen," Thao and the Get Down Stay Down had established themselves on the indie pop/folk
rock scene. However, it was their album "We Brave Bee Stings and All" that really took them to the next level. The album had
all of the ingredients to become a success, and it paved the way for their future achievements in their genre. Their most
recent album "We the Common" was partially inspired by Thao Nguyen's time spent volunteering with the California Coalition
for Women Prisoners. During her prison visits, she met many women who were serving long-term prison sentences, one of which
inspired her to write the first track of the album. The hope and optimism contained in "We the Common" was also a recipe for
success, and the album also featured a guest appearance from musician Joanna Newsom. Since the release of their albums, Thao
and the Get Down Stay Down's music has also appeared in film and television, including the song "When We Swam" being used
for the opening theme of the television series "Offspring."
