The Afghan Whigs Background
The Afghan Whigs formed in Cincinnati in 1986, with
the original lineup consisting of Greg Dulli, Rick McCollum, John Curley, and Steve Earle. The band initially aimed to create
a group that was a mix between the Temptations, Neil Young, and the Band, but soon developed their own unique sound and style.
The group signed to Sub Pop in 1989, and the Afghan Whigs released their second album Up In It shortly thereafter. Music critics
gave the band's album glowing reviews, and it spawned some of their most popular hits, including "Retarded". The Afghan Whigs
went on a large tour in support of their album, and each time they stepped on stage to perform, they gathered hoards of new
wildly devoted fans.
In 1992, The Afghan Whigs released their next album Congregation, which featured what would become
their signature sound, a blend of punk, psychedelic, and rock. Their songs received regular play on MTV and The Afghan Whigs
toured extensively throughout the early '90s in support of their new music. After receiving major buzz over Congregation,
the band switched to a major record label, Elektra Records, to further their musical career. After signing to Elektra, The
Afghan Whigs released their most commercially successful album to date – Gentlemen – which thrust the group into
the mainstream spotlight. For the next several years, The Afghan Whigs enjoyed phenomenal success and critical praise, so
it came as a blow to their fans when the band announced their disbandment in 2001. Although the band split amicably, their
fans all over the world mourned the breakup with heavy hearts, hoping that one day the group would reunite. Fortunately for
the fans, the band did finally reunite in 2012, and now they are back and better than ever! You can see The Afghan Whigs perform
