The Arkells formed in 2006, and spent several years honing their skills and playing gigs around their native Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. And then in late 2008 they got their first big break when they were offered the chance to open for Matt Mays & El Torpedo on their Canadian tour. That same year the band also gained some national exposure when they performed at the halftime show at the Vanier Cup in their hometown. By the end of 2009, the band had won a Canadian Artists Selected By You Award for favorite new artist, and had released an EP and an album on Dine Alone Records. The following year proved to be just as spectacular for the group. They took home their first Juno Award and were hand-picked to open for Them Crook Vultures. The Arkells also made headlines when they performed an impromptu jam session with rapper Shad and Kesha after the Much Music Video Awards.
