The Art Laboe Show Background
Art Laboe is the man behind many "firsts" in the record and radio industry. For
instance, he was the first DJ to bring rock and roll to the airwaves of the West Coast and one of the first DJs to play both
black and white talents and the first DJ to initiate an "Elvis Hour," with the hour dedicated to the King himself. When the
Colonel and Elvis first arrived in Hollywood, it was Laboe who snagged the first and exclusive interview on the radio. Along
with Dick Clark, Laboe had the first sold-out rock and roll show hosted at the Hollywood Bowl, and he continues to sell out
arenas to this day.
Laboe took the initiative to start a radio show from Scrivner's Drive-In. Teenagers would flock
to the drive-in to hang out and offer live, on-air song dedications. And, Laboe made note of the most requested songs. Laboe
leveraged the live radio show, the audience and the request list and evolved it into something bigger - an album. It was Laboe
who came up with the idea of putting together an album that highlighted hits by various artists. Oldies But Goldies was the
first compilation album, which settled in on Billboard's Top 100 LPs list for more than three years. Since then, the series
has grown to 15 volumes. Laboe is also noted for coining the phrase "Oldies But Goodies," which is his registered trademark.
City of Los Angeles set July 17, 1981, as "Art Laboe Day" when he claimed his star on the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame. Other
highlights of his career include being added to the Palm Springs Walk of Stars in the fall of 2003 and receiving a Lifetime
Achievement Award from the National Hispanic Media Coalition. In 2005, he was the recipient of the Media Arts Award, in honor
he was presented with at the Hollywood Arts Council Charlie Awards ceremony.
Presently, Laboe can be heard over the
airwaves on two radio shows in the Southwestern part of the U.S.
A perpetual display of Laboe's contributions also live
in Cleveland's renowned Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum. Today, Art Laboe's name is still synonymous with everything rock
