One of the best parts about side projects of already-famous performers is that their new groups don't have to go through the same growing pains as bands without a history. The Autumn Defense is made up of musicians who already honed their skills with other bands, meaning that their live shows are always top-notch and unforgettable.
Even before The Autumn Defense rose to prominence, most people had heard of one of the founders, John Stirratt. Stirratt was already famous because of his work with bands like Wilco and Uncle Tupelo. Stirratt was in need of an outlet for his creations that didn't fit into his band's work, and he teamed with likeminded musician Pat Sansone to form The Autumn Defense.
The sounds of The Autumn Defense are at the same time reminiscent of the past and pointing toward the future. They have a feel of the 1960s and 1970s that is reminiscent of some of the biggest pop acts from those decades. They add in a depth of instrumentation and lyricism that begs the indie label and draws fans to their live shows.
