About The Color Purple Houston
The Color Purple is an award winning Broadway musical based on the Pulitzer Prize
winning novel by Alice Walker. With music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis, and Stephen Bray, and with a book by
Marsha Norman, The Color Purple has been dazzling audiences since its premiere years ago. The musical was originally workshopped
by the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta during the summer of 2004, and later had its world premiere on September 9, 2004 at the
same theater. The original cast for the Atlanta production included La Chanze as Celie, Felicia P. Fields as Sofia, Saycon
Sengbloh as Nettie, Adriane Lenox as Shug, and Kingsley Leggs as Mister. Staged by Gary Griffin, and scenic design by John
Lee Beatty, the first production enjoyed a successful run. After its stint in Georgia, the musical finally opened on Broadway
at the Broadway Theatre on December 1, 2005. The Broadway production was produced by Oprah Winfrey, Scott Sanders, and Quincy
Jones, and included choreography by Donald Byrd with musical direction by Linda Twine. This production of The Color Purple
shot to fame, and was able to recoup its $11 million production investment within the first year, and it ended up grossing
over $103 million. The Broadway musical closed on February 24, 2008, after 910 regular performances.
extraordinary success on Broadway, the show began its first national tour in Chicago at the Cadillac Palace Theatre on April
17, 2007. The show was so popular that it required a four week extension, and brought in about $1 million per week during
the first half of the engagement. Because so many people involved with the production had ties to Chicago, the premiere also
had a star-studded red carpet event, with everyone from Jesse Jackson, R. Kelly, Roger Ebert, and United States Senator Carol
Moseley Braun in attendance.
The Color Purple cast album, which includes fan-favorite songs like "Somebody Gonna Love
You," "Our Prayer," "That Fine Mister," and "Brown Betty" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. You
may have seen the film version of The Color Purple, but if you've never had a chance to see a live performance of The Color
Purple, you are really missing out on an extraordinary show. The musical captures all of the heartbreak and hope of the Pulitzer
Prize winning novel that it was based on, and presents the story with rich music and stunning set designs.
