Every year, television mogul Oprah Winfrey releases a list of her favorite things. If she had to compile a list of ultimate
favorite things, The Color Purple
would inevitably land on that list. The story started out as a book by Alice Walker, and it was later turned into a movie
with Oprah. Now, Oprah had a hand in helping to bring the musical version of this touching story to life.
Celie is a young woman living in Georgia in the 1900s. She suffers sexual abuse at the hand of the man she thinks is her
father, and the two children resulting from that union are taken away from her. When he sends her to marry a much-older man,
the abuse continues. As new people are introduced into Celie's life, she soon learns the power of her own voice and her worth
as a woman.
Unlike the book or film, the musical version of The Color Purple features an amazing score. The score is a mix of styles
like jazz, ragtime, blues and gospel. Some of the songs from the score include "Somebody Gonna Love you," "That Find Mister,"
"What About Love" and "The Color Purple." Make sure to catch this unforgettable theater
show when it comes to West Palm Beach.
