About The Enchanted Island New York

The Enchanted Island is a "pastiche", or collection of various works, and features amazing pieces from a variety of baroque composers, including George Frideric Handel, Antonio Vivaldi, and Jean-Philippe Rameau. This stunning opera was written by Jeremy Sams, who cleverly combined elements of two Shakespeare plays: The Tempest and Midsummer Night's Dream. The Enchanted Island was originally the idea of Peter Gelb, the Metropolitan Opera's general manager, but it was carried out beautifully with the help of Jeremy Sams, conductor William Christie, director Phelim McDermott, and an all-star cast. The story-line follows Prospero, the exiled Duke of Milan, who lives on a remote island with his daughter. His former love, a sorceress by the name of Sycorax, has been banished to the dark realm of the island, and he has stolen her servant and enslaved her son.

The Enchanted Island premiered at the Metropolitan Opera on December 31, 2011, and has been met with rave reviews. The original cast included countertenor David Daniels as Prospero, mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato as Sycorax, coloratura soprano Danielle de Niese as Ariel, and many other talented performers. This creative opera takes viewers through a number of stunning sequences, including an underwater scene with Poseidon and mermaids who appear to float above the stage. Another scene features a ship gliding over waves. As the weather worsens, the seas swell and the ship succumbs to the storm. All of these dazzling effects are thanks to the creativity of Phelim McDermott's production, with Julian Crouch as associate director and set designer.

If you've never been to an opera, The Enchanted Island is the perfect way to get acquainted with a variety of songs. The Enchanted Island is essentially a mash-up of songs including classics like Handel's Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno, Teseo, La Resurrezione, and Vivaldi's Cessate, Il Farnace, and Griselda. Where else can you see so many amazing pieces performed in one setting? Along with the exquisite set design and elaborate costumes, seeing this opera in person is truly a delight for the senses.
