        The origins of The Florida Orchestra date back to the 1930s. It was then that the WPA orchestra took hold in Tampa, followed by the Tampa Symphony Orchestra in the 1940s. In 1959, the Tampa Symphony Orchestra became the Tampa Philharmonic. Also in the 1940s, the St. Petersburg Symphony formed. In 1966, the two orchestras formed and became The Florida Orchestra, and theater tickets quickly became fan favorites.

        When the merger between the St. Petersburg Symphony and the Tampa Philharmonic happened in the 1960s, it was called The Florida Gulf Coast Symphony. The Florida Orchestra got its current moniker in 1984. It isn't simply fans in Florida who can enjoy The Florida Orchestra, because it also travels to other venues around the nation.
