The Good Rats formed in the 1964 with five members who were all students from St. John's University. Ted Haenlein, Frank Stapleton, Eric Crane, Denny Ryan and Peppi Marchello were the original members who performed under the original name U-Men. The group began playing local clubs and eventually caught the attention of record executives who signed them. They covered other bands while they were working on their own music. In 1969, the band released their first self-titled album. Although their first album was well-received, it was their third album, Tasty, that was their most popular album to date. They performed in venues like Madison Square Garden, The Philadelphia Spectrum and New York' Central Park. In the 1990s, Marchello and his son began playing under The Good Rats name and had a hit song.
