The Holmes Brothers grew up in Christchurch, Virginia, moving out to Harlem eventually and bringing the music they grew up listening to with them. In 1990, the band released their debut record, In the Spirit. The record immediately let listeners in on the group's appeal, tantalizing them with the old-fashioned harmonizing that has become the Holmes Brothers' trademark.
