In the 1980s, few bands captured the Los Angeles punk sound like X. But the band's interests expanded beyond the brash
rock music they're best known for. They formed a side project in 1985 called the Knitters that gave listeners a very different
side of the band, focusing on Americana and folk music. Get concert
tickets to see the Knitters perform live!
The Knitters first came together with X members Exene Cervenka on vocals, John Doe providing vocals and bass, D.J. Bonebrake
on Drums and Dave Alvin on guitar. The year they formed, they released a one-off -- Poor Little Critter on the Road. It was
a unique offering from a band known for its grit, turning instead to an all-acoustic, soulful country band.
The Knitters began as a side project from X, but has blossomed into a bona fide successful band since then. The Knitters
released a follow-up to their 1985 release in 2005, called The Modern Sounds of the Knitters. The record earned them good
reviews, and suggests there's a lot more to hear from this distinctive band.
