Though this production of The Little Mermaid is based off of the Disney animated classic, the original tale was written in Denmark in 1837 and was released in a collection of stories that included such widely renowned stories as The Princess and the Pea, Thumbelina, and the Emperor's New Clothes, all written by Hans Christian Andersen. In fact, Andersen has been so celebrated as an author that a statue dedicated to him exists in Central Park in New York.
