The Matches Background
The Matches was initially formed under the name "The Locals" in 1997. The
original lineup consisted of Shawn Harris, Matt Whalen, Matt Esposito, and Justin San Souci, all of which went to the same
high school together. After graduation, the band experienced several lineup changes throughout the years, but that didn't
stop The Matches from becoming a huge force in the punk world. During their first couple of years as a band, The Matches'
style veered more toward ska music, but it eventually evolved into a pop punk sound.
By 2003, the group had officially
changed their name to "The Matches" and were well on their way to achieving significant success in alternative rock. They
released their debut album, E. Von Dahl Killed the Locals, in 2003, and the recognition they received from the album and from
their high-energy live performances scored them a record deal with Epitaph Records. With a record deal under their belt, The
Matches got to work on their second album, Decomposer, which they released in 2006. To support the new album, The Matches
joined the Vans Warped Tour and the AP Tour, headlining shows with bands like All Time Low and The Rocket Summer. Thanks to
their heavy touring schedule, The Matches garnered countless new fans across the country, and they started to emerge as one
of the best bands in alternative rock.
The Matches cranked out so many catchy pop punk songs over the years that you've
likely heard some of them, if not on the radio then possibly while shopping at Urban Outfitters, who highlighted the band's
songs on its Summer 2008 Soundtrack. When The Matches announced in 2009 that they would be taking a hiatus, their international
fan base was bummed. However, this made the band's recent reunion that much sweeter! All of the original members are back
together and are ready to put on a knockout show for you and your friends. Secure your tickets to see The Matches in concert
