About The Osmonds

The Osmonds first got their start as a simple barbershop quartet, with brothers Wayne Osmond, Merrill Osmond, Jay Osmond, and Alan Osmond singing together. Later, their younger siblings joined them, Jimmy and Donny. The group started singing barbershop songs in their local town. They were also regulars on the Jerry Lewis show in the late 60s. After being signed to MGM, the Osmonds were ready to take control of their career and start playing more rock-oriented songs. The band started recording and had their first hit with "One Bad Apple." The song hit the number one spot in 1971 on the Billboard chart and remained there for five straight weeks. Later pop-rock hits followed, like "Yo-Yo," "Go Away Little Girl," "Sweet and Innocent," and "Hey Girl."

With their massive success, the Osmonds toured all over and left hordes of screaming girls in their wake. This Beatles-like phenomenon was coined "Osmondmania," as the band seemed to elicit the same type of hysteria in teenage girls at the time. By 1973, the Osmonds had numerous singles on the charts, but changes started to take shape as the boys aged. Because the Osmonds were devout followers of Mormonism, their conservative upbringing started to conflict with their desires to keep pursuing a career in music. With the thought that they could reach people through their music instead of electing to go on a mission, they decided to release a Mormon concept album called "The Plan," which managed to produce two hit songs, "Goin' Home" and "Let Me In."

During the mid 1970s, the Osmond family started to branch off and start their solo careers. Marie Osmond was dominating the country chart with her 1973 hit "Paper Roses," and Donny had several pop hits, including "The Twelfth of Never" and "Puppy Love." Their later hits, like "Love Me for a Reason," managed to hit the top 10 on the charts. Although Donny and Marie enjoyed successful solo careers, the Osmonds still recorded together and released albums.

The Osmonds' Breakthrough Album

The Osmonds got their big break with their first number 1 hit, "One Bad Apple." The single was released in December of 1970, and reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and it also managed to claim the number 6 position on the R&B chart. Interestingly, the song was written by George Jackson, and the song was originally intended for the Jackson 5 when it was written. The success of "One Bad Apple" paved the way for their future success as a group. Soon, the Osmonds were touring all over and creating mass hysteria at nearly every venue they visited. The group would continue to release numerous successful hits throughout the years, in addition to spawning Donny Osmond's solo career.
