The Palestra

The Palestra

The Palestra History

Located in Philadelphia, The Palestra has been bringing one great game to the court after another for more than a decade. Even though it hasn't been around all that long, it has become nothing short of a staple of the local community thanks to the wide variety of events that it offers, from basketball and wrestling to plenty of other events that come through looking to entertain the masses. The Palestra is named after a similar Greek word (palaestra), which was a rectangular building that was used for Ancient Greek athletic competition. These days things are quite a bit different, but the tradition of the spectator sport is still thriving.

First opened all the way back in 1927, The Palestra has gone through a number of changes, but still regularly brings plenty of intense basketball games to the local community as the home venue for the University of Penn Quakers. Once you're there in the stands watching your Quakers do their thing on the hardwood, you'll be glad that you're not anywhere else, as there is nothing quite like the atmosphere of a big home game featuring your favorite team.

The Palestra Events/Teams

When the Quakers are locked in a heated battle with a top-tier opponent, there is nothing close to the feeling of being in the stands with your fellow fans, though that's not something you're going to learn sitting on your couch. Come out and see all the action the way it was meant to be seen as the Quakers look to dominate their conference opponents and make a big move up the standings.

But while the men's team often gets much of the press, there's also plenty of excitement about the women's team as well, and that's because they always have an explosive roster loaded with some of the best players in the game. There are so many big matchups on the schedule, you'll have plenty of opportunities each and every season to join in the heart-pounding action.

Philadelphia, PA

Though Philly often gets left out of the spotlight thanks to prominent northeast cities like Boston and New York, there is no denying the legacy that Philly has, nor the thriving entertainment scene that it has to this day. It even was the breeding ground for Benjamin Franklin, the man who is arguably the greatest mind in American history thanks to his jaw-dropping commitment to politics, diplomacy and inventions of all kinds. The very spirit of Franklin is exuded by this one-of-a-kind Eastern city, and you'll see that type of creativity whenever you make it out to Forrest Theatre to see some great entertainers do their thing. Philly was even one of the few cities that can boast being founded before 1700.

OK, so quite a bit has changed since the early days of the European settlement in North America, but it goes to show just how rich of a tradition that Philly has. One look at this town and you'll understand what made the original settlers call it home, and it doesn't get any better than mixing with the locals at a top-tier venue like The Palestra. With a steady stream of unbelievable matchups that come to the hardwood, there is nothing better than actually being there so you can see it all up close and personal.

The Palestra Seating Layout

Whether you're on the right, left or somewhere in the center, you're bound to get a great show if you make it out to The Palestra. No, we're not talking about governmental impasses and political theater; we're talking about the elegant seating arrangement of the The Palestra in Philly. There isn't a bad seat in the house, which is something that you really won't understand until you actually make it out to see it for yourself. Once you're there watching one of your favorite musicians or sports teams, the last thing you'll be thinking about is your seat, however, as you'll be jumping out of it all too often from one ballad to the next as a great musician brings the house down.

With nearly 9,000 strong for the biggest events of the year, this is just one of those places that you absolutely need to be a part of sooner or later if you love big-time concert or sporting events, and one look at the schedule and you'll see plenty of prominent matchups and concerts that you know you'll want to see up close and personal.

The Palestra Trivia

Did you know that The Palestra once had the biggest crowd ever for a basketball game on the East Coast?

It was Jan. 1 1927, and the Quakers narrowly took down the Yale Bulldogs 26-15 in front of 10,000 strong. Though scores tend to be a little higher these days, the energy around this world-class basketball arena remains as exciting as ever, making it just one of those places to be if you're looking for top-tier college athletics in the Philly area.
