The Urge Background
The Urge's current lineup consists
of Steve Ewing, Karl Grable, Jerry Jost, Matt Kwiatkowski, John Pessoni, and Bill Reiter. The group's formation dates back
to 1987, when a group of high school students got together to form a band. Steve Ewing didn't join the ranks until the band
had already burned through two lead singers, but once the other members discovered Ewing, it was as if all of the puzzle pieces
fell into place. In 1989, The Urge released its first works, a cassette titled Bust Me Dat Forty, which showcased the band's
eclectic and unique blend of genres, which include rock, reggae ska, hip hop, funk, and even metal. With so many different
styles of music blended together, one might think that The Urge's sound might be chaotic and discordant, but the group found
a way to merge these various styles seamlessly so that they created a captivating and extremely cool sound.
The Urge released their first full-length album, Puttin' the Backbone Back, and they continued to tour extensively in support
of their work. Music lovers gravitated to the unique sound of The Urge, especially after the band started adding various instruments
like the saxophone and the trumpet, which really rounded out their funky and irresistible blend of genres. In the early '90s,
The Urge went on numerous tours with 311, which helped them generate a huge fan base, as 311 was one of the biggest names
in reggae and ska at the time. After years of success, The Urge announced their break up in 2001, which devastated fans. Fortunately,
the group couldn't stay off the radar for long, and they reunited about a year later for a handful of reunion shows. In 2011,
The Urge got back together for another round of reunion shows, but this time they also reformed in order to write and release
new music, much to the delight of their fans. So now, not only can you catch The Urge back in action on stage, but you can
