The Band:

The Used originally hails from Orem, Utah. Formed in 2001, this rock group signed to Reprise Records that same year and shot to fame in June 2002 upon the release of their self-titled debut album. Their second album,In Love and Death, came in September 2004, and their third album,Lies for the Liars, was issued in May 2007.Shallow Believer, an EP that featured most of the band's B-sides, was published in February 2008. The group spent the better part of 2008 recording their fourth studio album,Artwork, which dropped on August 31, 2009. A fifth album, entitledVulnerable, was released in March 2012 via the independent label Hopeless Records. Albums by The Used have garnered gold and platinum statuses in more than six countries across the globe. By 2008, they had sold more than 3 million records internationally.

The Used was founded in January 2001, originally comprised of members Branden Steineckert, Quinn Allman, and Jeph Howard. They had already cut several songs, but did not have lyrics and needed a vocalist. The group held auditions at Howard's residence, but had trouble finding a satisfactory vocalist, describing the auditions as "terrible." Finally, Allman invited Bert McCracken to become the band's vocalist. In the band's early days, its members suffered from poverty, homelessness, and substance abuse, panhandling for change so they could buy food. The Used finally scored a deal withReprise Records in late 2001.

The band's self-titled debut album was issued on June 25, 2002 to a stream of upbeat reviews. The disc spawned four singles: "A Box Full of Sharp Objects," "The Taste of Ink," "Buried Myself Alive," and "Blue and Yellow," with the latter three climbing the charts. The Used later played at the Warped Tour, Ozzfest, and Projekt Revolution, in addition to Box Car Racer's first and only tour. While on these tours, they hired a touring guitarist named Greg Bester. However, Bester was later forced to go back to his home country when he could not obtain a working visa. The band scored much recognition when Bert McCracken started dating Kelly Osbourne. In July 2003, The Used put out a compilation CD/DVD combo package calledMaybe Memories. The CD contains live, rare, previously unreleased tracks and demo songs, while the DVD discusses the history of the band and features part of a live concert.Maybe Memorieshas achieved platinum certification.

In 2004, lead singer McCracken's ex-girlfriend died from a drug overdose while pregnant with his child. The band's second full-length album was thus titledIn Love and Death, referring to the tragedy McCracken experienced during the recording. In Love and Deathwas released to mostly positive reviews, and yielded three singles: "Take It Away," "All That I've Got," and "I Caught Fire." The album has achieved gold certification.

The Used issued their third album, Lies for the Liars, on May 22, 2007. That year, the group was the headlining act at the Give It a Name festival. In June, the band performed at the MuchMusic Video Awards for the first time ever, and scored a nomination for Best International Group Video, for their song "The Bird and the Worm." The band went on to play the Reading and Leeds festivals in August, and embarked on a tour across the United States in September. Lies for the Liars landed in the top five in seven countries, and yielded four singles: "The Bird and the Worm," "Liar Liar (Burn in Hell)," "Pretty Handsome Awkward," and "Paralyzed."
