Finn Andrews spent his teen years playing in folk bands in Auckland, New Zealand, and by the time he was 16, he had caught the attention of London record executives who were looking for a new, cutting edge band. They found such a band with The Veils, and the band signed to the indie/major hybrid label, Blanco y Negro. The band released their first single, "Death and Co." in 2002, and their first big commercial release came in November of that same year. The band gained traction in the music world, but amid disputes with the label and each other, the band split up in 2004. Andrews embarked on a solo tour of the US and Japan, and then returned home to find a new direction for the band. After jamming with two high school friends in his bedroom, the trio amassed enough material for an entire album. With the addition of a guitar player and a drummer, the band began recording sessions in Los Angeles. They released a new album entitled Nux Vomica, and it made several critics' best of the year lists in 2006.
