The members of Tiempo Libre want to reach a wide audience, reinterpreting and reinvigorating the traditional Cuban music that they grew up with. Their first big performance was in 2002 at the Ravinia Festival, where they opened for Celia Cruz. They dazzled a crowd of more than 12,000 people, and were asked back the following year to perform with Aretha Franklin in front of a crowd of 20,000. The group also toured Asia later that year, bringing their music to another part of the world. Because of their success across the globe, they were quickly signed with Sony Masterworks. Their first album Bach in Havana was nominated for a Grammy award for "Best Tropical Latin Album." The album featured tracks with Paquito D'Rivera and Yasvany Terry, and was a fusion of Bach with Afro-Cuban rhythms, and reflects their classical training and the timba music that was the soundtrack of their childhoods. The group has been invited to perform with some of the leading orchestras in the country including the Houston Symphony, the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and the San Francisco Symphony. Their latest album My Secret Radio is a collection of songs that reflect the tumultuous time in their native Cuba when the government forbade its citizens to listen to American music.
