The son of former baseball player Frank Edwin "Tug" McGraw, Jr. Tim was interested in many different activities, including sports from an early age. He even attended college on a baseball scholarship. But his true love was music, and while in college, he began playing guitar and performing for tips at local clubs. He eventually quit school to focus on his music career full time. He was discovered by Curb Records executives when they were riding in Tug McGraw's car and heard Tim's demo tape. In 1992, he released his first album, and saw minor success. It wasn't until he released the single "Don't Take the Girl," from his second album that he saw major notoriety. The song was a No. 1 country hit and earned him two Academy of Country Music Awards for Album of the Year and Top New Male Vocalist. He continued to churn out hit after hit, and has become one of country music's biggest stars. In 1996, McGraw headlined his Spontaneous Combustion tour, which featured aspiring country music singer Faith Hill, whom he married later that year. The couple collaborated on several projects including the Soul2Soul II tour, which became the highest grossing tour in country music history.
